I really loved Antigone but the other two (Oedipus the King and oedipus at Colonus) less so. To be honest, Sophocles seems to be all about melodrama; these read like soap operas for a general audience. He uses tons of idioms. I wonder if he was coining these idioms for the first time, like Shakespearre, or if he was just using tons of tropes and was an unoriginal bore. There are a few beautiful passages and thoughts in the first two.

I thought that Antigone was particularly well-written--beautiful, and full of meaning about what is truly moral when one's own morals are opposed by the dictates of the state.

Themes:
- the ethics of the individual vs the state (Antigone vs Creon)
- the ethics of the dictator vs his people (Creon vs everyone else)
- honoring one's family vs the state

Also this translation seems to be stellar (although I'm not an expert on the original Greek or anything so not fully qualified here, but to my layman's eyes, these feel like really good translations).

I'm a complete neophyte to the ancient world, and the Three Theban Plays of Sophocles were my very first toe dip into ancient Greek literature.

For each play I wrote out a detailed plot outline, some relevant themes or interesting topics to think on, and my favourite quotes. I found this really helped me lay out everything in my head and achieve a greater understanding of the works. These plays are so vigorously detailed and poetic; elegant heapings of subtle meanings and insinuations lather each and every page; pure, pounding dramatic force is wielded by every single dire line; everything about these works of ingenious beauty make them impossible to go unloved by any fan of literature.

This play was totally boring untill he finds out his wife is his mother and all the killing and the eye gorging out parts. i was forced to read this class. the ending was rather obvious. I am not a fan of greek myths, but of all the greek myths i have been forced to read in my life this one actually made some sense and held my attention for more than 3 pages

Wow, are these good tragedies. My favourite was definitely Oedipus the King, just because of the sheer absurdity of the tragedy and it was very Extra (as the Greeks were, obvs), but they were all engaging and thoughtful and interesting. I appreciated the subtle wisdom in the tragedies, the lines that really spoke to me, the heartbreaking ending of Antigone's story (rip). These are classics for a good reason! Even if you have no intention to study these tragedies or analyze them, they're worth a read (or two, or three...). Highly recommended!
