The Juni Ba comic here is why I bought it and completely incredible. Unfortunately, the other two I just did not like. There’s some interesting themes rooted in African tradition, mythology, and history, but they’re highly masculine and all about physical confrontation and with less interesting art. If it was just the middle comic—Juni Ba’s—this would be 5 stars.

I enjoyed the art work but I'll be honest, I can't say for sure I was following the stories. I'm not sure if that's because I'm inexperienced with reading comics or if these rely on an amount of cultural knowledge that I don't have. I think the issue is more with me however so I can't mark the comics down for that.

I backed this volume in addition to the Regular Kugali on Kickstarter because I was curious about the different level of content being provided that was labeled 18+. Aside from one of the stories depicting a monster phallus about to rape a women, the rest of graphic violence seemed to be about the same as the regular edition. I felt like the quality of these stories were a bit better. The standout collection was Kayin and Abeni. The art was so unique, I love the mix of sci-fi with tribal huts and boats and the humor of the third issue about Slug Yassa was my favorite out of the entire book. I love everything that artist Juni Ba and writer Keenan Kornegay are doing with these characters. Overall, this volume was an improvement in dialogue, art, and storytelling.

I read this thanks to my daughter who just knew that I would enjoy it and I did! I don't know tons about this medium, but I know something good when I see it. If you are a comic fan or just looking for a place to start, definitely check out Kugali.
