This is the first in the NUMA Files series and introduces a new cast of characters working for Admiral Sandecker at NUMA. I'm still trying to understand who they are as this book was all over the place and disconnected that you lost track of who are the main players. If you didn't play close attention you could easily lose tract of the point of view and made for a not so easy book to read as I had to go back to check who was doing or thinking or saying what.
The main character is Kurt Austin, think Dirk Pitt, and he has a side kick, Joe Zavala, think Al Giordino. There are a couple of others on the team and I'm still trying to figure them out even though they had a huge amount of the book focused on them. It has the same style of adventure as the Dirk Pitt series. This time the NUMA team are on the hunt of those behind a series of attacks on archeology teams that have anything to do with pre-columbian artifacts. It takes them from Africa to Mexico to the shipwrecked Andrea Dora.
It's just not succinct enough to be completely enjoyable.

Inhoud: Ergens op de bodem van de Atlantische Oceaan liggen de schamele resten van het luxe passagiersschip de Andrea Doria. Maar zeer weinigen weten dat er zich in het ruim een onbetaalbare schat uit de pre-Colombiaanse oudheid bevindt - de ontbrekende schakel in de geschiedenis van de mensheid.

Kurt en Nina moeten deze samenzwering onthullen voor het te laat is.En achter de stille, stalen scheepsromp van de Andrea Doria ligt misschien de oplossing...

Drie sterren voor de schrijfstijl en het verhaal. Afgaande op de laatst gelezen boeken is het een goed verhaal, maar ik zal het toch een keer opnieuw moeten lezen voor ik een duidelijke waardering kan geven.

Clive Cussler is geboren in 1931 te Aurora Illinois en opgegroeid in Alhambra California. De laatste plaats was voor hem het belangrijkste in verband met de zee waar het aan lag.
Cussler ging twee jaar naar de universiteit toen de plicht riep en hij naar Korea ging voor de oorlog. Hij werd uiteindelijk sergeant en vliegtuigtechnicus. Na zijn diensttijd ging hij in de reclame werken. Eerst als copywriter en later als creatieve directeur. Voor het schrijven van diverse reclames voor tv en radio heeft Cussler een prijs op Cannes gewonnen.
In 1965 begon Cussler te schrijven.
Tevens is hij oprichter van NUMA een instelling die zich bezig houdt met maritieme en marine geschiedenis en het vinden van spullen van historische waarden zodat ze tentoongesteld kunnen worden bij non-profit orgnisaties.

Entertaining popcorn read - cheesy action movie in book form. I definitely skimmed some parts and altogether skipped some others but it made me actually laugh out loud a couple times and was a good break from the real world.

I like the "science", I like the mystery, but I have not found a single Cussler character that I have enjoyed enough to care if they live or die.

I chose this book for the Popsugar challenge, for the prompt “a book with an animal in the title” since I had destined the one chosen previously to another prompt, but I must say I didn’t liked this too much.
The story is too long, the times that the NUMA is in danger is ridiculous, the bad guy had the potential to be a really bad guy but the final fight didn’t satisfied me.
There are so many questions left unanswered! How did the NUMA know where to go to solve the mystery? I did not understand how the went from the stone to Guatemala O_o Sometimes the writers draw the map of a land so we, readers, can also have a vision of the place, but there isn’t one here and I honestly did not understand anything of the description they have made of the map. And how did “the bad guy” know where to look if he did not see the stone?

This book is fine. It has some great moments but overall it's just OK. There are many great sequences but are unnecessarily too long, like the Mayan chase of Gamay and Chi. The ending could have been much better. And the lead characters Austin and Zavala act stupid sometimes, like not having protection even at the final sequence even though everyone knows Halcon will appear there.
The book is a fun read though. You will enjoy every chapter and mostly not get bored.
