This was a guilty-pleasure book. That is the best way to describe it. It was very predictable, but when normally that bothers me; it DIDN'T bother me in this book. There were some very cheesy parts so that's most of the reason it's knocked down a star. I thought the Battle-Of-The-Bands side plot should have been better wrapped up. Still though, I devoured it!

I recommend this to anyone who is a fan of:
romance, chick-lit, growing up, opposites-attract and music.

4/5 stars

At the start of senior year of high school, brainy Sara wants to find the perfect boy. She believes Dave, the new jock in town, is the embodiment of perfection, and has the potential to be her dream guy. Meanwhile, slacker rocker Tobey cannot stop thinking about Sara. He’s been sought after by plenty of girls, but his feelings for Sara are radically different. There’s just something about her that makes him unable to look away or think of anything else.

To everyone’s surprise, Dave asks Sara out, and the two of them are soon together. However, Tobey is determined to get to know Sara. From minimal contact, the two find themselves inexplicably attracted to each other. It’s the little things that matter to Sara, and Tobey’s got it in spades: they share similar interests, quirks, and preferences. However, he is a huge slacker; he doesn’t even want to go to college!
Perhaps love can change these star-crossed lovers for the better by the end of the year.

WHEN IT HAPPENS is a cute love story about high school students. Colasanti’s dialogue is witty and fast-paced, almost guaranteed to make you laugh out loud. That being said, Sara and Tobey’s relationship is not, unfortunately, really something to shout about. At first Tobey’s sentiments are sweet, but then they turn cliché. And the whole brainy-girl-lusts-after-jock is overplayed and not at all interesting anymore. Colasanti’s attempt to create unique and likable characters is not, in the end, successful.

Just like all of Susane Colasanti's books, this one was greatness. It was realistic, funny, and so cute. You root for Tobey to be with Sara from the very beginning. He understands things about her that no one else can. They're very different people but that's what makes them really connect. It makes them challenge each other and look forward to the unexpected, if that makes any sense. Tobey helps Sara to be less serious and let go, while also appreciating Sara's drive to learn and do well in life. Sara helps Tobey to be more serious about school while also appreciating his free and creative mind. They complete parts of each other that they never thought they could find and that's just such a beautiful thing to me.

really cute, romantic, sweet, and definitely life like. if only the style of writing was a little better and more complex.

Liked the writing style but I would have liked a little more in terms of plot. Also a plot thread about bullying had no resolution...it was just kind of abandoned. However, I liked both Sara and Tobey as well as the alternating viewpoints and would try this author again. Just not a 'love connection' for me this time.

I did enjoy this quite a bit but I didn't like all the sexual references and bad language. Sure, some will argue that's what teens talk about, but still, it's a turnoff and I don't want my teen reading it. But I definitely liked the references to "Say Anything" and the boom box scene. Awesome.

Not sure why we had to go slut shaming people but the perspectives of the characters felt genuine.
