About to start eating his way. The book is not the best-written ever, but the info is great and the recipes look spectacular.

I read this book to get acquainted with blood sugar and healthy diets to avoid blood sugar issues as I start designing at Sano. This is a book packed with some really good, hard to implement advice. Stuff like only eating stuff with low glycemic index, limiting dairy and gluten significantly, and eliminating sugar and processed foods. There were a lot of specific suggestions and stories of how it radically changed people's lives.

Unfortunately Dr. Hyman spends at least 10% of this book singing the chorus: "visit bloodsugarsolution.org to sign up now". Because of that I can't really recommend this book to anyone unless you're serious about joining his program at "bloodsugarsolution.org today!"

This book is not original enough, or well-presented enough, to justify looking at it instead of the rest of the bookshelf on nutrition. Pick the Jaminet books instead.

The quizzes (before/after) are so basic that they aren't useful.
Way too much preaching about the Evil Food Conglomerates.
A lot of scientism (talking in scientific-sounding terms) but not much science.

I received this book in a good reads giveaway!

Lots of helpful information here. As with other diet books, have to pick and pull information that is relevant to you. The author provides methods and objectives and tells what to avoid in managing care and relationships with the doctor when it comes to blood sugar levels, diet and obesity. This book was very simple to read and understand. Great health book!

This book is SUPER informative about nutrition, and I loved reading it. I even got 2 more books from this wonderful author. I didn't regret this purchase whatsoever.

No 5 stars because the promo talk was sometimes a bit pushy/ overwhelming. The few times that I did try to find something on his website, I couldn't find it or the link didn't work anymore.

But... it is a book that everybody should read, patient and doctor. Functional medicine makes sense to me. Try to find the cause of your complaints and tackle that instead of prescribing pills and shoveling your symptoms aka your body's signals for help, under the carpet. Your body will start to cry out louder and louder, and in the end you'll end up feeling worse and worse.

The book is nicely categorized. It's easy to read and follow the steps. If you don't have a functional medicine practitioner in your area, the information in this book will help you ( and perhaps your regular doctor? :p ) on your way. I also like that there are a lot of recipes, and they do look good :-)

I'll be reading another book of Mark Hyman again.

This book should have been an essay. It’s nothing revolutionary. I’m sure most people know the majority of the information in this book, but it’s a nice reminder.

I listened to this as an audiobook. IT was beyond irritating! If I ever hear "diabesity" again I think I will knock my head against a wall. TH writing style is popmpus, preachy, and the science is limited.
When I try to summarize the message, it is a nice message. So, instead of reading the book, just read the book jacket.

In general, a good book on adjusting one's diet and habits to improve your health. As a relatively active, healthy person who eats mostly whole foods already, I picked up this book mainly to find a couple recipes the author shared during an interview on NPR. I found there was still a lot to learn from the book. Information based on current nutritional studies and healthy recipes and menus built based on the evidence-based guidelines in the book were especially helpful.

So, why only three stars? The book felt very gimmicky. If you are a gardener and have read Square Foot Gardening, this feels like the nutritional version of Mel's system. Dr. Hyman even has his own store where he is happy to sell you the supplements he recommends in the book (Mel's mix, anyone?). Further, each chapter included surveys you can take to evaluate your own health. The survey questions were vague enough that there isn't a single person I know, even super fit, super healthy people, who would not end up with some level of "diabesity".

Also, and this is a minor concern compared to the amount of shilling that goes on in the book, the book could have been half to two-thirds as long and still would have gotten its point across.
