Marvel 1602

I picked this up during Comixology's Black Friday sale in late 2018, intrigued somewhat by the premise: basically, transplanting 'modern' Marvel superheroes to the year 1602.

We thus have no Superhero costumes, but do have characters such as Peter Parker, Dr Strange, Magneto, Professor Xavier, Daredevil, the X-Men, the Fantastic Four, Black Widow, Nick Fury, etc all the same, yet subtly different - it just goes to show, really, how these characters are all archetypes!

I must admit, though, that (while the clues were there), I didn't see the identity of one character in particular coming until it was revealed in the final book of the series.

I enjoyed visiting these characters in such a different context. I enjoyed trying to figure out who’s who. Natasha being Doom’s mistress?! Didn’t see that one coming. Rojhaz as Steve was brilliant. A fun read.

A phenomenal read. You don't even have to know Marvel superheroes - I was reading or seeing a bunch of them for the first time. And the art is stunning. Anyone with even mild comic geekiness should read it like now.

This is getting three stars because I am really conflicted.

I am tempted to give it four stars because the idea of an Elizabethan marvel universe is pretty cool and Gaiman manages to weave in a lot of characters (though sadly not Wolverine) in interesting ways. The art was good, thought not great, and was consistent throughout.

I want to give it two stars because it just wasn’t as good as I wanted it to be. i had heard it was great, but I had to force myself though it and took weekends to read what could have been read in hours. It just didn’t grab me.

Kind of hard to get into, but well worth it. Also, it worked really well, given the time difference and the unfamiliarity of some of the characters to me.

This is a fun Elseworld type scenario. I like how Gaiman reimagines classic Marvel characters in this historical setting.
