reading slump is OVER!!!!! THANK GOD!!!

I'm so glad I finally read this book it's fucking WILD. I don't think I have read a book in a Long time with such well done twists.

I'm trying to think of what I can say without spoilers but just,,,wowie. Private school drama???? Incredible. The way the author instills this sense of fear and in paranoia in both readers and characters is like, seriously insane. I never knew what was going to happen next. I was absolutely going BONKERS. Dark academia with black queer leads and mysteries and secrets!!! Incredible!!

I listened to this on audio while reading it because it is dual pov and the narration was Fantastic. Dual narrators really made me feel connected to these characters and their families like they were real people going through real events. Definitely listen to it if you can.

One thing to note is this book deals very heavily, and openly with antiblack racism. It is central to the story. It also covers many instances of homophobia and classism as well, so I would encourage readers to check trigger warnings (which are listed in the front of the book, and author's website) before reading.

All in all Faridah Àbíké Íyímídé is a wonderfully talented storyteller, I cannot wait to read more of her work!

This was a twisty, Get Out type of read. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this. This was a bit of a slow start but as the story continued to unfold I understood why. This author loves a dark academic setting that is full of complex social issues.

This book bills itself as more light-hearted than it is.

3.5

Wow. The mystery of this book was absolutely thrilling. While a lot of readers seemed to dislike Chiamaka, I thoroughly enjoyed her character along with Devon. I felt that they had very different lives and distinct personalities which I can appreciate in a multiple POV book. Their characters also felt very realistic from their home dynamic to their school dynamic.

The reason why I gave this series a 3.5 is because once the mystery was revealed it’s not that I was disappointed it just felt very under explained. I felt that there was really no explanation to what happened to the school especially since the issue was brought to the public’s attention (I thought the epilogue was satisfying). More than that, I don’t feel the story with Belle and Martha was concluded enough, it left me feeling confused.

HOWEVER there was a lot that I enjoyed about this book, it spoke on very important topics such as systemic racism and eugenics. The story was told in a creative and very disturbing way that will leave you feeling unsettled. I enjoyed this book despite how it all went down.
