This is a fairly gentle read - no big angst, no big drama. But I ended with a big smile on my face.
I think as a British reader it is a lovely view of a corner of the country (would have liked Henry's view on the Wookey Witch!). And for those concerned, cricket is there but not in a big way!
Henry is a US transplant but I didn't get much of a feel for him as American - his voice to me was British throughout. I enjoyed the humour of the culture clashes and would have enjoyed more.
Ryan didn't come across as strongly west country but I think to do that, the written language would have been quite hard to read. I would have liked more of him thinking about his sexuality. As most of the story is from Henry's perspective we only see Ryan's spoken words.
I did like how Ryan grew in his affections and affectionate behaviour with Henry and was expecting to see more about how the locals and cricket team reacted to them being together and then married which we didn't get.
A lovely love story. 3.75*

22.5.18 reread : all comments above still valid, and for me a character driven plot that I enjoyed! It dig drag a little bit but overall still a lovely story.

Okay, so I got as far as the middle of the book, well, technically, my kindle said 45%, but y'know close enough.

I want to be said that there was not a sight of anybody playing cricket in the first part of the book (and tbh I felt let down), except for that one conversation where Henry was talked into being a part of local cricket team or smth. I'm bit hazy on the details already bc I've been reading this book since last year.

It started off well and it was engaging to a point where it just kind of bored me and I couldn't for the life of me read more than five pages at a time. I can't really say what it was because the characterizations and the writing is good.

so yeah. not for me.

Don't judge this book by it's cover (or title). While cricket does play a small role in this book, the focus is on the relationship between Henry and Ryan. It was a nice slow burn, though I didn't really feel any real affinity towards any of the characters. It was no surprise how the book concluded, and I can't really say I was a fan of it, but overall it was a nice read.

This is mostly not about cricket. But it IS about inheriting a dilapidated manor and restoring it, while at the same time falling in love with both a person and a place. So, I really enjoyed it! I do love a makeover/fixer upper story.
