I love mysteries based in that in-between-the-world-wars time period, and I'm a sucker for a detective who is flawed or haunted. So I eagerly picked up this first book in the Ian Rutledge series. I liked it, but the pacing dragged, and the ending didn't seem to fit with the story as it was laid out. Friends who have read more in this series tell me that the writing gets better in later books, so I will probably continue reading the series. Ian Rutledge, who is haunted by the snarky/smart voice of a man he was forced to kill, is an interesting choice for a detective.

Didn't care for the main character Rutledge. He's kind of a jerk and the gimmick of the dead man he had courtmartialed in the war speaking to him in his head is hard to get around for me. May try another some time to see if this oddity continues.

About 3.75 but I know it going to get better as I get into the series. Good history of the 1st world war and life in that timeframe. Looking fwd to the next book

Post WWI - I think - Inspector Rutledge from the Scotland Yard with PTSD is sent off to solve a case involving a former Colonel. And petty people wanting power - why?
A little slow moving - the physiology of the whole thing is intriguing. A gothic mystery type.
I'm not a fan of the negative imaginary friend in his head.
p.182 "Well, he'd discovered in the trenches of France that Hell itself was not half so frightening as the darkest corners of the human mind.
p190 "Men don't like to be wrong, sir."
