I did the audio - it was spectacular! A voice for each character- lent a whole new kind of creepy to this thriller.
A young university student doesn't return to her form after a party- so many suspects. The case turns cold soon - no leads, and life moves on.
Until a true crime author picks up the threads. New interviews. New information.
Great story - but the ending. Ugh.

Definitely one of the most memorable and unique crime story I’ve ever read.

The thrilling story of a university student's sudden disappearance, the woman who became obsessed with her case, and the crime writer who uncovered the chilling truth about what happened...

In 2011, Zoe Nolan walked out of her dormitory in Manchester and was never seen or heard from again.

Just remember: Everything you read is fiction.

"Cleverly blending the real and imagined worlds until the reader can't differentiate the two, Knox has created a twisty, turny thriller that cuts through the heart of the modern true crime fascination, all while keeping us enraptured by it."―BuzzFeed

I won this book in a Goodreads Giveaway. It is a different type of mystery book in that it is written as if it is true crime and the author is one of the characters. Since I like to read true crime, I found it interesting and engaging. It was relatively easy to keep the large cast of characters straight since it was presented as a series of interviews, phone calls, notes, etc. I thought the whole concept was fascinating and quite enjoyed it.

Thoughts: About a chapter or two in, I had to look this up to make sure it was a fictional story. Knox inserts himself as a character in this tale of a young college girl gone missing, twisting together a plot filled with lies, secrets, motives, and shady characters that could leave readers wondering if there isn't some truth to it. I struggled a bit with the dialect of the characters, but that's my limitation as an American reader, and at times it was difficult to distinguish between some of the characters. The ending, while a smidge unsatisfying, is quite realistic given the plot. It took me a while to really get into the story because there were a lot of character "sidebars" that led nowhere, but once the story got moving towards the midway point, it was hard to put down. The plot picked up, suspects emerged, and the hint of a body or two made the second half of this book intriguing and worth the read.

If you like true crime documentaries, I cannot recommend this enough. It’s such a good and creepy mystery.

And the audiobook is definitely the way to go with this one - it’s a full cast, although it did take me some time to figure out what voice was which because they aren’t very distinct. It’s like listening to a series of interviews, a great audio experience!

This was such an interesting concept - a fictional true crime story. I really liked that the story was told through interview transcripts with the people involved in Zoe's life. Every one of them was unlikable at times (or all the time), which made for a great story. I had my suspicions on who the killer was, which changed at multiple times, but I was completely wrong!

Thanks to Random House UK, Transworld Publishers & NetGalley for the DRC in exchange for an honest review.

I loved the multiple narrators and the feel of this. I was shocked at the end, and one thing I wished for happened. So all the boxes ticked on this one. Highly recommend.
