One Sentence Review: If I could slap a big label on any book with the word "Fun" it would be this one, no question.

Very strongly influenced by [b:Charlie and the Chocolate Factory|6310|Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (Charlie Bucket, #1)|Roald Dahl|http://images.gr-assets.com/books/1309211401s/6310.jpg|2765786], but enjoyable nonetheless. Some good puzzles, not too difficult, and they fit in with the story very well. I was pretty disappointed when Gil was disqualified, and I thought the wrapup of the games and the major mystery of his father's career coming to an unfortunate end were handled in a believable and clever manner.

While the premise of the Gollywhopper Games was intriguing (children compete in a toy manufacturer's contest) the plot was flat for me. I wish that the author described the marvelous, over-the-top settings in the factory better, and the mystery surrounding a recent theft in the factory was not that mysterious...
The author admits in the afterword that she set out to create a book like Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, I wish this wasn't so obvious.

Seems like a take off of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and the Westing Game. Kids will probably like it- but it doesn't feel original.

Cute book. Sort of a mix between the Mysterious Benedict Society and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
