Damn, this was horribly paced. Like, the beginning is pretty intriguing, but nothing happens for about 150 pages or so. And by now I don't think this world or this writing is gonna captivate me. The protagonist is just an empty vessel that plot happens to.
There are mysteries coming up constantly but nothing is ever solved and what is happening is just either boring or needlessly gruesome.
I've gone ahead and spoiled myself as best as I could, but it doesn't seem like it's gonna get more interesting anytime soon (or at least paced better)

it's just a heaping pile of garbage. the plot is agonizingly slow, which would have been okay by me, if only it wasn't pointless at the same time. absolutely everyone is evil and I don't want to read about the kid being horny for his friend every five pages. the "protagonist is so special" thing is also very much in your face the entire time, despite the fact that other than having magical powers the kid is not special at all. i was very excited for this book, since originally it looked like something I would have liked, but a big no from me.

It might not have been the right time for me, but the content was so dark. I needed a more hope filled story. The world was interesting but I couldn’t take one more bad thing happening.

A good but somewhat frustrating book. Pheby excels in writing about the small things and the nuances, as with a dog’s perspective or the sarcastic glossary. He loses it at the bombastic action and “big magic” scenes, in which destruction and decay feel Michael Bay-ish. Still, I’d read the sequel.
