After finishing TDT I figured I'd give the graphic novels a shot. Not bad, but not as good as the original book in my opinion. I think part of it is I just really don't generally care for western comic book style. Very dark, thick shadows over so much of the art. It's still a great story though.

The art is haunting, if not somewhat over-stylized and heavy handed for my taste. I wanted to like the story. King does his work in world-building. I am too tired of stories of men and fathers and violence and the only ways that female characters have any stake is as a witch or a damsel in distress. For science fiction and fantasy, there’s no imagination into what a woman might be.

Not a review but just a note. This volume essentially covers the plot of The Dark Tower 4: Wizard and Glass.

I'm a huge fan of Stephen King and the Dark Tower series. Therefore, I was somewhat reluctant to read this graphic novel. It is a comic form of Wizards & Glass (Dark Tower IV). However, I was delightfully surprised. The comics stay true to the novel. The artwork is fantastic. At the end of each comic is a narrative that explains the mythology of the world of the Dark Tower. I particularly enjoyed these sections.

Of course, since this is a graphic novel, it does not convey everything in as much detail as the novel. The writing is not particularly great but the mythology is so good! If you have not read the actual Dark Tower series, don't read the graphic novels yet. What is subtle and hinted at throughout the novel series is made explicit in the first few comics.

Thoroughly enjoyed it. I waited years to try it just in case I didn't like the genre hop. The illustrations are magnificent and dark. I am looking forward to strting the second story arc.

7/2015 - I bumped it up a star because I very recently re-read [b:The Gunslinger|43615|The Gunslinger (The Dark Tower, #1)|Stephen King|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1375776480s/43615.jpg|46575] and this satisfied a craving. I am so in love with Lee's illustrations! I'm still not a fan of the familiarity of the narrator with the reader, but the story is solid.

I love the way the GN explains things like Ka and Ka-tet as soon as the words are used. King lets the reader figure their meanings out, but with the GN there is a very finite number of words and a lot of information to pass along, so explaining is a good choice.

Did anyone else notice the use of the word "shiny" in a very Whedon/Firefly-esque way? ;)

2008-
I have to say that the captions bothered me a bit. As the narrator was addressing the reader, he spoke in too familiar a voice. As I read the Dark Tower series, I feel it's almost an epic fable, but addressed in such a way makes it too personal and "right now". I want to feel like I am reading/hearing this story eons after it has taken place, not a week later. It loses a bit of it's magic in this way. To me, anyway.

I did love the illustrations. Susan's face was perfect, if her hair and clothing left something to be desired. Cuthbert looked almost perfectly the way I pictured him. Alain, not so much, but not different enough to be distracting. I loved the way the peach fuzz on Roland's face was suggested. Also, the way his body, when he was shirtless, really looked like a 15 year olds. Obviously developing into a powerful man, but not quite finished.

Even with these complaints, I will certainly be reading the rest.

It really is great jumping back into the DT again, even in comic form and to start off where it does 👌 beautiful and gut wrenching. It doesn't get any easier 😭 you all know what I'm talking about.

King's story and Jae Lee/Richard Isanove's art are beautifully wedded in a dark, impressionistic visual take on Wizard & Glass. This has been sitting on my shelf for almost 8 years. I'm glad to have finally read it, now that I finished the novels. I'll definitely pick up the subsequent volumes.
