Really fun dystopian YA book. A good page turner similar to The Hunger Games. Excited for the final book!!

The premise is kind of silly. I cannot see humanity ever dividing itself in that manner. However, the execution is wonderful, although the evil characters could use some more layers. The pacing of the story is quite good, and kept me reading. Now, if I only wasn't number 101 on the hold list at the library for the sequel!

This was okay -- I enjoyed the pacing and the plot, though the backstory was weak and wordbuilding non-existant. The ending seemed abrupt and rushed, and there were many parts of the story that just didn't seem plausible. For example, the first assessment test. Choosing a piece of cheese places you with one faction, choosing a knife will put you with another. Humans are not that simple and I would never believe that a society would rely on such a lazy half-assed test. For pretty much the entire plot I knew what was going to happen before it did, but that isn't always such a bad thing. I did like Tris as a character and what kept me going was the desire to see what happened to her and Four. It's not a great book, but I didn't think it was bad, either.

I liked the first half of this book better than the second half. It's tough for me when so much can happen to the characters (mainly Tris) and they can just keep going. And that applies to both the physical things that happen and the emotional. A severe beating to a small 16-year-old girl would put her in the hospital, not make her a little sore the next morning.

However, when I remind myself that this is YA fiction, it makes a little more sense. I do enjoy the strong heroine in Beatrice, though I would have liked to see more character development in others, such as her family. It might have helped the second half of the book be more clear.

More details about the world they're living in would have helped, as well. Why is Dauntless always jumping on and off the train? There doesn't seem to be a driver though it slows down just at the right time, and no one else seems to use it.... Just details that would paint a clearer picture.

But all in all, a good story and a quick read.

I honest to God don't know how I finished this book. I must be Divergent because I did not get entranced by the crappy plot and terrible characters that Roth has concocted in this serum. Here is how I am hoping Book 2 in this series begins and ends:
The citizens of the United States outside of the greater Chicago area have decided just to blow up the city and end all the drama. The End. Oh, well.
Read at your own risk!

I loved this book! It moved quickly, I wasn't at all bored or tired by the plot. I loved that I found myself in conversations with my friends (all of us in our mid-to-late twenties) about what factions we would have chosen or excelled in. Even though it was written for a young audience, I thought it delivered strong characters, a unique plot, and solid writing that anyone can enjoy.

Not exactly what I thought it would be. With all the 4+ star ratings I guess I was expecting...more. More. I was expecting more. The book does have action and that's when it gets entertaining. I was just expecting more. I also felt kinda weird about the "romance" part. I don't know why. I also never really felt connected to the characters. I guess I just expected more. I will admit that there was one thing about this book that got on my nerves. The repetition of words or facts that have clearly already been made know. I guess I just expected more ;)

Your usual dystopian YA; nothing mindblowingly original, but still a pretty good read if you have, like me, a soft spot for these.

A solid YA dystopian book.
