I found Fayne to be a beautiful story that handled the intersex identity of Charlotte/Charles in a satisfying and loving way. I loved the coincidences and familial ties (like Isadore being Maggie's son, and Mae turning up in the Refuge, restored to herself enough to recognize Charlie when they arrived -- it gave the novel a Dickensian feel that was perfect for the setting and style. It gives us a queer character who can sit on the same shelf as Oliver Twist and the like, and was a hopeful tale of queer possibility. It was deeply sad at times, but had beautiful shifts from the joyous nature of Charlie's schooling to the utter horror of their surgery and what Mae went through, to the bravery of Rosamund and Josey, to the love-filled ending, Fayne was made up of so many notes. The magic added another wonderful layer that never felt out of place.
