Every Gentleman in London has seen the most sensual painting, that has them all wondering who this mysterious lady could be? And why would she do such a thing? So when three young women come in the night, in hopes of stealing the painting in hopes that no one would be able to guess who, they are caught red handed by Julian Delane and his two friends. Then there is a wager placed between them, on who can guess the true identity of this woman, but if they never guess right, then the three woman get to keep it. So goes the battle between friends and sexes. However Rebecca Leland never thought that this painting and the necklace that she carries called "Scandalous Lady" would draw so much attention to herself, attention that puts her life in danger. So she flee's London, however Julian follows her and then vows to protect her until they know who is behind it. In this enticing book we see how Julian realizes how precious Rebecca is to him, and they neither of them wants to give up the priceless love they have found in each others arms.

I found this one to be a endearing but also a adventurous story. At the beginning we have this silly wager between these two, but then the plot really thickens up with excitement when Rebecca's life is in danger, but what she never suspects is that Julian is a fierce protector and lover. I truly loved the plot and all of the characters in this book. Both main and sub ones. Rebecca is a spirited young lady, but has suffered much in her young life as well. Even though she has been surrounded by loved ones, her childhood was filled with illness after illness, never being able to live a life of adventure that she has only dreamed of. She has such a inner strength and perserverance to not be afraid of illness, but to live every moment with adventure and passion. Julian's family name is filled with scandal, however he knows that once he finds the truth of his father's death, than he will be able to clear his name, and the answer is in Rebecca, who holds the very item that once was his father's. But through this adventure they both are driven into, they realize the biggest one of all is finding true love and a passion that consumes them both. I have to say this is one of my favorite series of Gayle Callen, and I am looking forward to read the future stories between Julian's two friends and Rebecca's two cousins since this is Book 1 in the series. I have no complaints to this book apart from the fact of the flow of the book. It wasn't all consistent but for the most part was a engaging read with some good passion, excitment and adventure, and a tender love story.

BUMMER ALERT: the "Scandalous Lady" in question turns out to be the name of a big crazy diamond. I read it anyway, though. And goodreads now tells me that this is book #1 of a series! From the way we completely ignored our heroine's 2 friends for four-fifths of the book, I'm guessing there are 3 books.

In Pursuit of a Scandalous Lady - the first in the Scandalous Lady series and spin off from the Sons of Scandal Series - by Gayle Callen is an entertaining and delightful premise. Three young adventurous girls find themselves in a wager with three dangerous gentleman. Let the games begin!

The beginning of the book was hilarious. The girls getting caught trying to steal a painting of a naked lady and being caught by three well intoxicated men was so much fun. I was just smiling and laughing. You could tell going in that this was going to be a fun journey...mainly because all the characters were so likable. And you can already sell Susanna and Leo are going to be quiet the pair.

I've liked Rebecca since we met her in the "Sons of Scandal" series. I could tell she resented that fact that her life was repressed because of her health and had no wish to be treated like an invalid. I knew that would be the focus of her character here and I was correct. After spending most of her childhood either sheltered or in a sick bed, she wants an adventure. This story certainly gave her an adventure to remember! I really enjoyed reading about her character with such a strong rebellious spirit. Most of the things she encountered on the trip should disgust her, but she was so excited to be living and enjoying life she couldn't complain. She lived for the day, not caring or worrying what was expected of her...how much time she had left on this earth. She didn't know and she didn't care what tomorrow would bring. She only cared about living in the moment.

Julian was not my favorite hero ever written by Callen. He was kind of a stick in the mud. He had to have a control of everything and he always had to have a plan. Obviously this is the complete opposite of Rebecca...and she does bring out the best in him. He does seem to relent more in this journey and give Rebecca some semblance of freedom, but he's kind of annoying while he's trying to compromise. But by the end, he did change and that's what matters. He guided Rebecca but he always let her help and always let her find her own way. It was nice to see him change from controlling everything to simply letting Rebecca be by his side. She was a partner to him and that's really what made their relationship so strong.

I have to say this wasn't the most romantic journey in a historical romance...they are running with no money living in horrible conditions. Rebecca was so excited about it all and so thrilled to be free from the constraints of being a "lady" so seeing it through her eyes/perspective was always fascinating. Julian always had a plan (obviously lol) and he always knew what the next step would be so it was really interesting to see Rebecca keep him on his toes. Their attraction was strong and Callen, as with all her couples, does a fine job of drawing out the tension between them.

This wasn't my favorite Callen novel mainly because the romance was there but I didn't feel it was as emotional or "swoon-worthy" as I've come to expect from her, but it was still a great read. Rebecca and Julian were a great couple and I can't wait to read Elizabeth and Percy's story next!

Unbelievably thin characters and a ludicrous plot. Blech.

This review is going to be super short because I've been reading this book forever and I just want to be done with it. This book really did not hold my interest but I made myself pick it back up tonight and finish. I thought this story was okay. I didn't love it but it wasn't bad. I personally thought the heroine was extremely naive and some of her behaviors were a little annoying. The plot was also super dramatic with a lot going on. Some people love that. It's a road trip romance and action packed. To me, the romance fell just a bit flat in here. Overall the characters are likeable but I didn't find them having a great depth and I wasn't particularly attached to either. I'm glad I finished it. I would read another from the series. Not the most intrigued by her writing though. Hopefully I like another by her more.
