This is book 2 of a four book series and the characters are just as wooden, the science as dodgy and the writing as stilted and unemotional as in book 1.

The author has misunderstood (or perhaps has poorly described) the difference between an enzyme and a bacterium. The 'genius' doctor doesn't seem to realise that a contagious disease can be spread before symptoms show - they go to CostCo and petrol stations when the local hospitals are filling up with hundreds of plague victims, and no-one is wearing gloves or masks. The author doesn't understand the difference between "the world" and "America", for example "the world" is not watching CNN and listening to Rush Limbaugh (whoever he is...) as pompously claimed. Naturally, the main characters are phenomenally rich, attractive and fit, but they have a strange relationship and continually laugh at things which are patently not funny.

The writing is poor - very little character development and almost everyone is a walking talking cliche. There are lots of misused words such as tantamount when he should have used paramount, admonished instead of advised, and ill instead of sick (the ill patients; the ill man; the ill zookeeper). Jarring. There is a great deal of info-dumping, especially lots of detail on various US government departments and agencies. This series has a distinctly right-wing feel to it.
