I listened to nearly 90 min of the audiobook and just couldn't get into it. Didn't enjoy the writing, and my mind kept wandering.

I finished the book a few days ago and had to let it sit for a little while before I could review. I’m still not entirely sure how I feel about it. I read it for a bookclub and was reluctant to start because I have avoided dystopian novels ever since Hunger Games and Divergent ended on what I felt were very low notes.
However, once I started reading, Red Rising sucked me in. The works building is excellent and Darrow is a delightfully flawed protagonist who messes up repeatedly but never does it in a TSTL way (cough*RachelMarianaMorgan*cough). He is constantly learning and evolving, and his journey was exciting to read. The characters were very interesting and multifaceted, which is a huge plus for me in books like these. I did feel like it could have been a bit shorter, as some sections went on and on at a slow pace, especially during the “games.” I also hoped for a different resolution with the Cassius situation and was disappointed that it didn’t go that way—it seemed a little to easy to create a lifelong enemy this way as opposed to having to face off later with a close friend.
The author isn’t afraid to kill off likable characters which is always a little nerve-wracking for me but it made sense in the story. I will hold off final judgement until I finish the entire series (thanks for that reading-related ptsd Divergent) but so far so good and a solid start to a series.

I did not like this book. It was a nice idea but not well written. The plot and settings are confusing and not well explained.
