Exceptional. An unforgettable conclusion to a brilliant story. Can’t wait to read Fool’s Errand

I really loved this book but
the rape scene really ruined a lot of it for me and how Althea got no justice.
Other than that it was excellent but I don’t like the way that was written :(

Robin Hobb is an absolute expert at creating real characters. She is an expert at making those characters relatable, with emotional weight behind them.

Ship of Destiny has these things in spades. The villains are real, and terrifying because of their realness. The general story arc is very high caliber, and I appreciate the overarching plot.

I do think that Hobb as an author (at this point I have read six of her books) can struggle to create a satisfying ending. Things happen, and happen, for two thousand pages. You are gripped by the characters the whole time. Althea, Malta, Amber, Paragon, Wintrow, Kennit... These are some of the most interesting and fleshed out characters I have read. As compared to other character focused authors who don't mind straying too far into darker territory, I appreciated how Hobb was so intent on showcasing growth and change (as compared to Abercrobmie for example). However, after two thousand pages of you wondering how this will all work out, it just kind of... does. Similar to the Farseer trilogy, a greater power appears and makes the conflict moot.

Spoilers for both this AND Farseer Trilogy:

In both the Farseer trilogy, and Liveship Traders trilogy, we end up with almost every important conflict being overwritten by a dragon (in the case of Verity's, more of a pseudo dragon) just running over the opposition. Yes there is a lot of important growth, and powerful reaction in regards to this, and I do certainly see how this is going to continue to affect the world in further RoTE books. In the end though, it can sometimes come off as unearned.

If the ending was a bit cleaner, I think this would be a 5 star book for me, but 4.5 is a strong score.
