Another great addition to Robin Hobb's "Realm of the Elderlings". I'm glad the character development finally came through.

This book was my favourite out of the series. But on a whole the series itself is now one of my top. The characters in this are complicated and realistic, they make mistakes and it's easy to see where they went wrong. I loved the premise of this series, the soft magic systems and the reveals were shocking as well as intricate. This is my first few books I have picked up by Robin Hobb and she is definitely now one of my favourite authors. I definitely plan on reading more and will even pick this beast of a series back up one day.

For those of you who don't know me, the Realm of the Elderlings (RotE) is a series that means everything to me. It's impossible to review something I love and adore as much as I do. Anything I say about this book won't encapsulate the overall feeling and story, so I'm not going to do my normal routine (fully).

This is the third and final book in the Liveship Traders trilogy and the sixth book in the overall RotE series and we continue to follow several characters, mostly from the same family (the Vestrits) with a few exceptions. This takes place in another part of the world - primarily Bingtown and we also get an added Rain Wild portion. As with the other books, it's full of feminism, pirates, dysfunctional families, political intrigue of a different kind than we had with Fitz and complex relationships of all kinds.

Every element I normally do in my breakdowns (writing, plot, characters and world building) is just phenomenal. Hobb's characters and world building in particular are some of the best I've read. It's not a simple act of reading these books, you live them.

It’s hard for me to write an objective review because this book destroyed me!!! Hobb is the queen of character development. Every character came out of this series changed, for better or for worse.

I despised Malta in the beginning and truly thought there was nothing that could make me like this nasty little girl, but you know what? Her changed behavior made me like her and root for her.

I also loved the Liveships, both Paragon and Vivacia.

My heart broke when Paragon asked Amber to make him a face someone could love.

I also found Althea’s arc truly heartbreaking.

Abusers are loved by people. Their loved ones don’t want to believe they could do something that horrible. I felt the reactions around Althea were realistic, even though I wished everyone would believe her and turn on Kennit.

My main complaint was that I found Amber lacking as a character within this series. I have not read any other of Hobb’s books, so it made me feel her character within this series wasn’t fleshed out and her role not prominent. If she had a bigger part, I would’ve liked her character more.

This was the best book of the Liveship Traders Trilogy. This series has not been my favourite of the Elderling Realms to be honest. The first two were a disappointed but this last back was incredible...until halfway through. The last 50% were difficult to read for various reasons (themes, events, etc...). I do understand some of the choice the author has made for characters arcs yet I wished it would have been dealt in a different way.
