Vampire Academy (The Complete Series) by Richelle Mead

The problem with this series is that it's written for teens but the content is more for adults.
Rose may be mature, witty, and a dangerous heroine at times. But she's also a bratty, rebellious, troublemaker teenager who uses curses to express herself, loves the idea of revenge (even if that turns her into the bully), and does stupid things on impulse. All the time.

I read the first three books before giving up and moving on to better reads.

Spoiler
Dmitri and Rose have feelings for each other. Dmitri also happens to be her teacher, seven years older than her, with extreme self control. But suddenly, after fighting their feelings for two books, he caves in, and lets himself act on his feelings.

Technically, the most explicit things described in detail are kissing all over, taking off clothes, and extreme passion. But a lot more than that is thought, said and done. (And, of course, there's the fact that the whole entire of Rose's society consists of single mothers since dhampir can only have children with moroi, and moroi tend to marry other moroi.)

Also, Rose, who doesn't see herself as a believing Christian, bases quite a lot of her assumptions about ghosts and magic on conversations she has with a priest. So, she might not live her life accordingly, but she definitely believes in saints and scriptures and the foundations of Christianity.

This book is also full of gross violence, (twisting people's necks as a quick way to kill them) and cutting.

Bottom line? Unless you're a teen looking for teen characters with attitude, and mature content, do yourself a favor and pick up a different book.

I really enjoyed the whole series and the sexual chemistry is on fire between the two main characters. There is definite character progress throughout as you see the heroine start to mature.

This was my favorite book series as a teenager, and rereading it now as an adult it’s incredible. There is strong female leads, the main lead is super badass with plenty of snark, and it has a beautiful storyline with lots of action and some romance.

Dhampir’s are the offspring of a human and vampire who gets all the good traits such as extra strength, speed, and life longevity. Dhampirs train their entire lives to protect the elite Moroi who are are full blooded vampires that run the underworld.

Rose is a quick witted, sarcastic, badass teenager training to become a Guardian. She and her best friend have been on the run for 2 years. But then they were caught and brought back to attend St. Vladamirs Academy. Why did they truly leave? Why were they finally caught and brought back?

Though I was way outside of the YA age group when I read this I loved it! If you weren't hooked by the first book ... you will be now!

The world was SO well created and the characters jump off the page. It is easy to fall in love or hate with them.

Each book got better as you grew to know the characters, there dynamics and the conflicts in their world! Plenty of action and MUCH better done than the movie that followed years later!

Four books into the series and I can't wait for more!

There's actually 6 books in this series, but I could only find a compilation of 4 on here. I really liked this series, even more than the Twilight series (if you're going to compare vampire books). The only reason that I didn't give it 5 stars is because the main character is a teenager and acts like one. So she bugged me at times, but overall still a really good series and I would recommend them to anyone!

Forever drawn in and inspired by the badass warrior heroine and her beautifully dangerous friendship with her best friend that she is sworn to protect. The main love interest drew me in immediately and had me falling in love.

In 2021, I decided to start an archive project that covers just about every book I can remember having read since ~2010 because I wanted to see the most complete history of my reading habits from the time I was a young adult reader. If you're seeing this note, it's because what follows is not a proper review, but rather a (most likely very incomplete) brief reflection on what I can remember very far after the fact.

***

I remember rereading these books a lot because they were probably the horniest things on my shelf back in 2010 when I was like 16. This book series was also 1000% the genesis of my age difference, student-professor kink. Side note: I actually just looked it up and LMAO, according to the fan wiki, Dmitri was born in 1990, making him just one year older than my husband (who's only 2 years older than me) and only twenty-four in the first book. When I read these as a teen, I totally pictured him in his 30s!

I don't remember these books well enough to write a real review for them all, but I do remember that I read the book Blood Promise specifically like 5 times and thought it was definitely the best one (it also has probably the least embarrassing cover art). I wish they'd done better with the movie they made with Zoey Deutch, it was horribly miscast and just generally very lame, but it had the potential to be interesting. I feel like Netflix could make a decent edgy teen series out of it.
