This picture book would be reallllly long for a preschooler, but I think my 7-year-old would love it.

This is my favorite book by her. The theme is expressed well in his book, and again, the illustrations are absolutely fantastic!

This is a great lesson on kindness without being preachy. So many great conversations can stem from this book.

I think the intended moral here is "be yourself" or "don't change your own nature to please others" or "if you DO try to be someone else, maybe your friends will mistake you for the Great Spirit and then you can tell them to give you food"

Something like that.

This story, by the author of STELLALUNA, has a slight fable-ish feel. Pinduli is a young hyena who is teased by the other animals for her big ears, fuzzy man, and wiggly stripes. When a turn of events allows Pinduli to get revenge on the other animal bullies, she chooses instead to help them discover why it is that they choose to be so mean...and to make amends.

A clever story about the root of bullying, and having pride in the characteristics that makes each of us unique.

Book #52 for 2012

This is another beautiful book from Janell Cannon. I'm not sure why, exactly, but I liked Verdi better. Maybe it's that this story didn't flow quite as smoothly and the resolution didn't seem as, well, "realistic" is an odd word to use for books with talking animals, but yes, realistic. Still, the topic of teasing and bullying is both important and timely, and I simply love that Cannon included animals that are rarely used as characters in children's books. There is also a nice "fact" section at the end.

Well, I guess I need to find a copy of Stellaluna now, don't I?
