Was a delightful read even if at times it was so sweet and "inspirational" it could give you cavities.

In 1954 Annie leaves her bankrupt farm in Maine with her horse and a dog and a 2-4 year life expectancy. She travels across the us garnering friends and fans along the way. She Makes money selling her autograph. She makes it in a little over a year. She goes in to live 20+ more years. The story is quaint and all about life in the 1950s.

A wonderful book about a 62 year old woman who unknowingly defines her destiny and legacy while traveling from Maine to California by horseback in 1954-55. The inclusion of the stories of the people she meets and of the towns and regions she goes through fully flesh out the book and make it so much more meaningful. The reader gets an up close picture of what it meant to be poor in America during a period of overall prosperity as well as the callousness of people toward those less fortunate than themselves. Yet, the goodness and kindness of many, many citizens also shines through. One sees and is nostalgic for an era when people opened their doors to strangers and took them in.
