After reading the first two Verity Sparks I was happy to read this new addition to the series, but unfortunately this book was nothing more than one 'Scooby-Doo' cliché after another.

What has happen to the Verity we used to know? She turned from a feisty, resourceful young lady, into a quavering, wavering milk-sop.
If she's not being obtuse and failing to understand the completely obvious, she's
Spoiler jumping at shadows and being spooked out by a fairly innocuous distant relative.

The plot is mundane and predicable with heavy handed hints that leave you no surprises with how it unfolds.
Spoiler With maybe one surprise at how ridiculous the is ending with papĂ  Sarinov being killed off in the last to chapter with absolutely no connection or enhancement to the story line, at all.

Verity is obnoxious and ignorant in the way she fails to grasp the situations happening around her and the other characters also seem to be as thick as two short planks, which leaves the read completely frustrated.
Spoiler Seriously Drusilla's and SP's whole 'engagement conflict' at the beginning of the book was probably the weakest excuse for changing the scenery and moving the story to Shantigar that I've ever seen in my life.
She flat of refuses him for seemingly no reason and then moves three hours away. But at the end of the book she literally just falls into his and everything all sunshine again, And no hint of explanation to what the heck that was even about.

The characters are way too annoying and flat for my liking and have positively no real depth to them.

But at the end of the day maybe I was expecting to much out of a kids book, and if I remember the other books being far superior It could just be the sad progression into maturity *sobs*, although my 12-year-old sister disliked it even more than I did.
Though this book still gets the lowest possible rating from me.
