In the 2nd Hamish Macbeth book, Hamish attends a very awkward gathering at the home of his lifelong love Priscilla, who's now engaged to a "suitable" upper-class playwright. After the party, a ladykiller gets himself killed in a gruesome way. Was it a hunting accident, or something more? Hamish finds out in his own low-key way in this very entertaining read.

I just love this series. I had no idea who the killer or why was till Hamish explained it all. I love a mystery that keeps me guessing.

Death of a Cad by M.C.Beaton

I'd read plenty of Agatha Raisin and I thought it was about time I investigate Hamish Macbeth. I'd never seen the TV series so I had no preconceived ideas about what the man would be like, but I was pleasantly surprised. The character of Hamish Macbeth is likeable and you want him to succeed in solving his mysteries. All of the books have the same strong plot that the Agatha Raisin collection has and as always I never work out the ending.

This one just seemed off kilter to me. This murder mystery plot was driven mainly by conversation, more of a "telling" aspect than "showing." The character development was very little, and there was a large array of characters who were all mostly unlikable. I loved many in her Agatha Raisin series, and had hoped to love this one too. Hopefully this series improves as it goes.

More a 3.5

My first outing with both Highland bobby Hamish Macbeth and Glaswegian author [a:Marion Chesney|50258|Marion Chesney|https://d.gr-assets.com/authors/1226562598p2/50258.jpg] under the pseudonym M.C Beaton, Death of a Cad, is a wonderfully readable, intelligent and enjoyable murder mystery - Hamish Macbeth is an endearing character if there ever was one! He is amative, captivating and the perfect guy to get behind.

Great Read

Actual Rating: 3.5

This was an enjoyable read. This is the second book of the Hamish Macbeth series. In this book, Hamish Macbeth finds out Priscilla is engaged to a playwright. At her engagement party, Captain Bartlett is found murdered after being shot while on a grouse hunt. I thought the story was fun and quick. I thought the idea of having a cozy mystery with a male character was also something different for me. I thought Hamish was a great character. He is mysterious, but I am enjoying his character more in this book. I think his character makes the story fun and exciting. He is described as bumbling, and lazy. However, as I kept reading, I thought he was observant and skilled at his job. I thought this is a great addition to my first cozy mystery with a male main character. The ending was great. I am looking forward to see how the series goes. I am excited to read book 3. Death of an Outsider, here I come. Overall, a great read.

A charming murder mystery set in Scotland. My first read in the Hamish Macbeth series, but it is actually the second in the series.

It was short - I could have read/listened to this on a lazy Sunday.

Audio narration was very good, voices all done well. And having it read with an authentic Scottish accent was definitely a plus.

This was so much more risqué than the Agatha Raisin stories. Not all of it, just the bits that mentioned naughty business, mentioned it well! :) It was laugh out loud at some bits. I really enjoyed it.

Peter Bartlett is murdered at a castle owned by Mr and Mrs Halburton-Smythe, after a party attended by a whole host of interesting Scottish characters. Hamish Macbeth is the local detective who happens to be in love with the daughter of the Halburton-Smythes - Priscilla. The only problem with that, is that the party was to celebrate Priscilla's engagement to London playwright Henry Withering.

I didn't think much of any of the characters except the two sisters, they were funny. The rest, including Priscilla, were just a bit mean and thought a lot of themselves - although they were attendees at a posh castle party and all suspected of murder, so that makes sense!? Oh and Hamish was cute. I guess we have to like him, he has a whole series!

We go through the usual detective whodunit process and eventually our man - or woman - is caught. Lovely to play along with this lighthearted murder mystery.
