The audiobook for Aetherbound was great, despite the story being pretty miserable. It's heavy on YA and light on sci-fi, with far more trauma and abuse than necessary.

This book is cool.  I was looking for a quick sci-fi read that wasn't too tense, and this was perfect.  Problems were solved with minimal suspense, there wasn't a lot of jargon or hundreds of planet names to remember, and it was generally an easy read.  If you're looking for hundreds of pages and suspense, this isn't the right choice.  I enjoyed the author's style and liked that it was somewhat conversational.  I'm invested in the characters and I'm hoping for more!

It wraps up OK, leaving room for more, and then it sets the hook for the next installment in the epilogue.

Discusses externally-imposed food restrictions to near-starvation levels and forced pregnancy.

There were so many excellent pieces of world-building and lore but it just wasn't executed properly. I think the biggest drawback of this book is that it is written as very YA. I think it would've soared if it was Adult and longer. There are a lot of difficult themes in this book but they aren't dealt with well but I did enjoy the characters even if their depth was not there.

I am delighted that there was very good trans rep in this book (I am not trans so please seek some trans reviews!) but it was just lacking overall even though I do want more of the universe.

There's a lot of talk about calorie counting in this book for various reasons and as someone who has been privy to many diets and that culture through my life, it brought up some discomfort but I did enjoy the overall message as the book progressed and that it was through the lens of energy rather than body size. But it is something to realize as you read this book.

In addition, the audiobook is incredible. The sound design and voice acting was just beautiful. The little additions of ambient sound made me very happy.

This is a trans-affirming sci-fi book with a premise revolving around someone who has the ability to (in certain contexts) manipulate genetics. It's lovely to read something that doesn't try to "fix" the trans character, but finds other solutions for the in-universe problems caused by their chromosomal situation. It's similarly understanding and cathartic around issues including but not limited to neglect and food restriction. The tagline is "There's a fine line between survival and cruelty", and the overall arc is of someone who was raised under the claim of survival-driven scarcity, slowly, in a zone of love and abundance, untangling which parts of her upbringing were actually just cruel.

Major pieces of backstory and world-building are conveyed in a series of well-described but pretty dense infodumps, one at the very start and a few more sprinkled throughout the rest of the text. They felt a bit clunky but were sufficiently brief as to keep from being overwhelming. The overall effect works well and I love the main characters.
