I guess this book was not for me. It wasn't what I expected to be honest. Maybe my expectations were a bit high for this book when I read the description because I was let down.

This was just okay, nothing more. The descriptions of place and setting were very good, and the two different time lines were interwoven with skill but the story itself just didn't grab me and the ending.... Well, let's just say I was disappointed.

Meh. I did really like how the author structured the ending by paralleling the two different break-ins, one that occurred in the past and was referenced somewhat mysteriously throughout the book and one that was happening in real time.

Max and Mecha first meet in the late 1920s aboard an ocean liner bound for South America — Mecha is traveling with her husband, a well-known composer, and Max is employed by the cruise line as a professional ballroom dancer whose sole responsibility is to dance fabulously with unaccompanied first-class women. A dance with Mecha initiates a series of events that will connect the pair, over distances and decades, for life.
When I picked up this novel in translation I went in blind, and I'm rather glad I did. Based on the cover flap now it doesn't seem like a plot I would gravitate to naturally, and I enjoyed the historical setting in places and times exotic to me, as well as a peek into a world of unfamiliar experiences. I would read more by Pérez-Reverte.
