This really felt like multiple separate stories. The further I got in the story, the more I found myself just feeling worse and worse for Claude, and all the other folks that shipped off to the war, I suppose. I didn't get as many of the lush descriptions of the American plains which I am used to from Willa Cather. Glad I read it, but I didn't love it.
