After a lot of light reading this year with mainly books of the “Romantasy” genre (good and bad) I picked this up in hopes of some more complex world building and character design. And what can I say? Shannon delivered. This book was as epic as it was engaging. The characters are diverse and all very different from each other and every single one is interesting.
Though slow to pick up in the beginning, the world that is being built in the first third of the book is so vast and interesting that it’s absolutely worth sticking with.
I loved this book and can’t wait to pick up the other works of S. Shannon as I also enjoy her writing style immensely.

This book delivered on the hype and I can only  recommend it to any fantasy fan and epics enthusiast.

I loved this book so much. I wasn't sure what to expect with how much hype it got, but I'm so glad I went in not knowing what to expect. For a book this big, the fact that it kept me engaged the whole way through is amazing. It was so worth it.

This book has an interesting take on the water-fire dragon dichotomy and I really enjoyed the world building behind the magic system. However the names of all the countries and people mentioned in the book without explanation made me feel like I didn’t understand the world building at all at times. Given the fact that I felt like I was waiting 600 pages for the action to finally happen, I think I would have enjoyed this book more if it was a series of shorter ones. Regardless, I did like this book and will consider reading the prequel to learn more about this world.

this book has no business being as long as it is. the amount of perspectives really threw me and it bothered me that they weren’t all featured equally. a lot of the book was really boring there were some parts in the middle that interested me but by the time i got to the end i was losing my desire to read it. as well the use of old english language makes it harder for me to understand whats going on at times. ultimately it was partially entertaining but i couldve spent the month it took me to read this to read something else

I really loved this book! The quality of this story matched the quality of the book cover art. I’m so happy to read a feminist epic fantasy with amazing world building and characters. The plot wasn’t overly predictable; there were several points where I was genuinely shocked. I loved the different cultures and how they were integrated into the storytelling. My favorite character was Tané but honestly all of the characters were well-written, even the ones I kind of despised
(*cough cough* Niclays)
. Also the dragons are so cool.I rated it a 4.5/5 only because I felt the pacing was a little rushed in a couple of spots, otherwise it would’ve been a 5/5 for me. I’m considering reading the prequel at some point as I make my way down my very long TBR

three stars is generous tbh and I ended up changing it to 2.5 to be more honest about it 🫠 I have so many thoughts on this book (a few good, quite a few nuanced, and many critiques) and maybe will try to condense them to an appropriate review length; if I do so successfully I may come back and lengthen this review later but tldr… priory I yearn for the book you have the potential to be 🥲
