Eh, for some 800 pages i expected some depth. But while the world is big, the story is not complex. Characters are 2-dimensional and even side characters looked like they are put in the story as ornaments. Villains are not so terrible, just what you'd find in a lot of YA fiction. A fun, light read, but that's all there is to it.

I was both kind of invested and kind of not in the characters and the plot. You would think this would add up to a mediocre experience, but somehow the combination of several "sort of interesting" elements compounded and created a great time.

The writing style is good, and there's very little in the way of queer high fantasy, so I'm glad to have this. Though this is a completely fictional world, going by the character descriptions, this is also a nice break from the "all white everything" tradition in high fantasy.

This is a book I really liked and would buy the sequel of, but not one I necessarily would call a must-read.
