4.25/5 stars!

City of Ghosts was such a fun, fast-paced middle grade book! Throughout reading it I could definitely feel vibes of The Archived, which was one of Schwab's early YA books. I love the fun chemistry that Cassidy and Jacob have throughout the book! Their friendship and the way the acted with each other always made me smile or feel like there really was such a strong connection. The inclusion of ghosts, with Cass having survived a near death experience and Jacob being a ghost himself, was such an exciting addition and led to so many scenarios. As with most middle grade books, the print is rather large/spaced out, so while it is 285 pages, it leads to much quicker page turns. It was also very fast-paced, which I loved, but still added quite a bit of development to the characters. I did have an issue with how our villian in the end didn't really seem to be so disastrous, but that was mostly due to how quickly the book went by. Although I wish the "battle" could've had something more to it, it was still done well.

Overall, this was a fun book! While it is a middle grade book, I can see people of all ages enjoying this! It has just enough spook, scares, and wittiness to catch the attention of older readers! Definitely pick this up for either yourself or someone else! It's a great introduction to Schwab's work while still being true to herself.

What a fun, engaging and suspenseful read!
City of Ghosts was such a quick read for me, which was exactly what I needed and I enjoyed every second of it. I really liked all of the characters and their dynamic and relations with each other. Cassidy and Jacob are such a great team and super cute to read about. I loved Jacobs character and how he always has Cassidy's back through every single situation. But I am also super intrigued by his story and I hope we will get more of that in the next book. Cassidy was such an enjoyable main character. It was so easy to emphasize with and root for her. Lara was such a great extension to their little group; I really liked her sassy attitude and her character in general.
Furthermore, the plot was fast paced and engaging through the whole book. For me, there was never a dull moment. And even though the story was quite simple and straightforward, it was so wonderfully done that I loved reading about Cassidys adventure. I also really liked the element of her walking through the Veil - Victoria Schwab did a great job in capturing what it feels like on the other side and everything Cassidy saw and felt was so vivid in my imagination.
It was such a satisfying story and I can not wait to see what happens in the next book.
