This book is a wonderful guide for people who are serving as caregivers to loved ones with Alzheimer's Disease. The author, Maria Ciletti, is a nurse who cared for her mother during her battle with the disease. Her personal and professional insight into helping those with the disease is invaluable. She describes the terrible feelings of guilt and hopelessness she experienced when trying to help her mother, who was no longer the loving mother she remembered. She outlines the behavioral clues that her mother exhibited that first alerted her to the fact that something was not right (forgetfulness, becoming angry and frustrated, forgetting her husband had been dead for 30 years, etc.). There's lots of helpful information about seeing a doctor for a diagnosis and what to expect, as well as some possible other causes of memory loss. She discusses the various stages of the disease, and some important legal issues that caregivers face. For caregivers who can no longer have the patient at home, there is wonderful advice on choosing a care facility. The book ends with some advice on how caregivers can find tools to help them cope and how to deal with the loss of the loved one. Overall, I found the book a wonderful mix of advice and personal experience. This book would be a helpful resource to many people as our population ages and more people become caregivers.

I received a copy of this book from the GoodReads FirstReads program.
