Someday, I'll figure out how to word my thoughts on this.

But to sum it up: you should read it for yourself, provided you're not a young child.

so deeply impactful, quiet story but richly written, tender and angry and full of love... oohhhhhhhhhhhh my god
  • all the genderthings. you can really tell that UKLG took a couple decades off and then came back to this story ready to get INTO it. convos being had, subtle interactions, it's all so well-done and interesting. like, i've been trying to get thru mists of avalon (where the whole Point is that it's women's stories in ye olden fantasy times) for a year now, and no shade at all to that book bc i DO enjoy it, but this hit way harder and made me have much more complicated & personal feelings abt womanhood and gender dynamics
  • Spoilerged and tenarrrrrrrrrrrr. i am weeping. "be patient with me" bro.... BRO

  • i understand why it ended where it did but i was still like "WAIT what about XYZ?!??" the last few chapters were so wild
  • everyone's journeys. wow. like the past books have been physical journeys as well, so this one being set in one place and dealing w more mundane events was rlly cool
  • anyway so. when i get a sparrowhawk tattoo no one judge me <3

I respect what Le Guin was trying to achieve with this book, and adored many of the new characters that were introduced. But ultimately there’s something of the enchantment the first three books held over me missing from this one. When I picked up the first Earthsea book it felt like nothing else I’d read: like an old legend rather than a fantasy book. This one feels much less stylistically and narratively unique. Its an enjoyable enough experience but it doesn’t feel like an Earthsea experience.
