4.25 stars. I am of two minds with one. First. I'm astonished I got as sucked in as I did because I was not expecting to really like this. (British/Australian romances are often missed for me). The main character is a lot. She absolutely has a lot of high functioning anxiety and needs to go see a therapist ASAP. It was a little weird tonally because it was sometimes unclear if we were supposed to find the situations that she got herself into funny because she very clearly did not think it was funny. A lot of times it just felt like a trainwreck you couldn't look away from.

All of that said.... The angst got me. This was so fricken angsty and it gave me little butterflies, so I don't think I can walk away saying that I didn't love it.

Unnecessary Drama
Nina Kenwood
Narrator: Maddy Withington
Pub Date: August 8, 2023

Unnecessary Drama was a super cute YA book by author Nina Kenwood!

Brooke, the main character, has left her home to attend College in Melbourne (Australia). She is anxious about this new experience and her roommates. Brooke is a super organized person, full of spreadsheets, lists, and is one to always follow the rules. Her organization and high expectations can sometimes make her anxious around others who are not the same way.

Her house has one rule: no unnecessary drama! When Brooke realizes one of her housemates is Jesse, her former friend from high school who was responsible for humiliating her at school, she is determined to not let his presence ruin her new experience at College. It turns out that Jesse has actually turned into a pretty good guy. Will Brooke be able to move forward and forgive Jesse?

I will say, perhaps my favorite part of this book was Brooke’s character and her thoughts and behaviors. While there were certainly funny parts about this book, I think this book will really resonate with those who are more on the anxious side, like Brooke. Perfect for anyone heading off to College/University, this book will help those leaving home for the first time, dealing with unexpected situations, and learning to be on your own.

This was a feel-good book and such a joy to listen to. The narrator, Maddy Withington, was just perfect! With this being an Australian romance, I felt her voice as the narrator was spot on.

3.5 stars rounded up to 4 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Thank you to Nina Kenwood, MacMillan Audio, and NetGalley for providing me with a copy of Unnecessary Drama.

I made it a little over an hour into this audiobook and all I can say is absolutely fucking not… this book is very juvenile, I thought I’d at least maybe be able to relate to/see myself in the main character but turns out she was extremely immature and very cringe so there’s that

Very easy light read! If you're looking for an easy Australian read, this is your sign. I loved this book and the story line, however I felt it was very predictable.

3.5 rounded up. A quick and easy read; it's good for a contemporary romance set in Melbourne.
There needed to be more of their relationship once they got together - the dynamic between them throughout was fun and it would've been good to see more of that once conflict was resolved.
