The book was better than the apselute worst. But I can also not speak highly of it. It was pretty boring and just one tracked. There was only talked about how you can use diffrent littary styles but it did not provide any proper examples of good or bad.

Only after reading most of this did I learn that Llosa has been endorsing right-wing authoritarianism, which is such a bummer. This small book has some great quotes (I like the bit about the desire to write fiction stemming from a rebellion against reality) and interesting approaches to narrator, perspective, etc.

Mostly interesting. Loses some credibility for using Hemingway as an example of craft well-done, like somehow the man knew what he was doing and had impeccable wordsmithing...

Would have loved to see Llosa reference more female writers. As it was, Virginia Woolf is, like, the token lady.

useful and interesting. it reminded me of my old school days, wishing i had such interesting literature classes. it also makes you want to read most of the novels he discusses there.
