I thought it was a really thorough and well written call to action that while not shying away did empower you to feel like you could challenge racism.

‘It’s very controversial, isn’t it?’ they’ll ask, over and over again, in the space of a thirty minute conversation. ‘Is it?’ I’ll respond. ‘Have you read it?’ ‘No,’ they will inevitably say.

Wow. I don’t have many notes on this one and that’s because I am left without many words. It is thorough, uncensored, and thought-provoking. As a White American woman, reading about these issues in the lens of British history and current events was new and important for me. I’ve always usually stuck to American literature because I thought it was the most relevant to me and my internal work, but having read this book discredits that.

As other reviewers have mentioned, I believe this is a read that everyone should be taking the time to get through. I appreciate Eddo-Lodge using her voice and perspective to give me more knowledge — not that it should ever have to be on her or other people of color to do so.

The book flows well and brings forth intersectionality and other relevant discussions. I was not left confused in any fashion — it was all clear and focused. She is a great writer and I like her style.

Significant and incisive overview of the systemic nature of racism and white supremacy in the UK historically and presently. Every section is poignant and I found the chapters regarding the intersections of racism, sexism, and classism to be accessible and very thought-provoking.

Reni Eddo-Lodge includes a mixture of historical accounts, personal experiences, transcripts from interviews, and analysis of quantitative and qualitative data across the book but never loses the fast-paced and engaging journalistic qualities of her writing.

There is mention throughout of other authors you can find for further reading on the different topics covered.

“You can’t skip to the resolution without having the difficult, messy conversation first.”

This is an important read for everyone. It’s a concise summary of the history of racism in Britain and how it’s led to where we are today. It’s an invitation to listen, and to educate ourselves, and it did a brilliant job.

This is the difference between racism and prejudice. There is an unattributed definition of racism that defines it as prejudice plus power.

An insightful novel, and one I will definitely be recommending to white friends and family going forward. Learning about British involvement in the slave trade and its history of police brutality was eye-opening and very worthwhile, so I'm glad I finally got around to giving this a read.
