The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay by Michael Chabon

Chabon presta aqui A homenagem à Golden Age.

I started this book all the way back in 2011. I got about a third of the way in before I stopped reading. It wasn't that I didn't enjoy it, I think I just kind of lost interest and moved on to something else. That said, I always had the intention of going back and finishing.

Cut to now and I started the book from scratch a week or two ago. While it took me a few tries to get hooked again, I finally did, and as a result, I was not able to put this book down.

I cannot recommend this book highly enough. Especially to those looking for an escape.

Another reread that didn't live up to first impressions from decades ago, but this was still very, very good. Some issues with it: the Joe sections were much stronger than the Sammy ones; Rosa was a complete cipher (and the only female character); it didn't really grab me until 400 pages in; and the resumption of relationships when Joe, Sammy, and Rosa, are reunited seemed hard to believe. But wow, the storytelling, and you really feel for the two main characters.

This has joined the short list of my all-time favorite books.

It is an excellent book, for every possible reason that makes a book good. It is well written and well constructed, it tells a compelling story with complex characters, and it left me wanting more.

On numerous occasions this book broke my heart with its beautiful prose and the aching complexity of the story.

I've always liked Michael Chabon's writing, but this book is, by far, the best of his that I've read.

This is one of those good-golly-wow books that I wanted to go back to the beginning and read again when I reached the end. The story of two Jewish cousins before, during, and after WWII and the birth of the comic book industry becomes so much more than that with an overriding theme of liberation that becomes the contrupuntal base note to so many hijinks riding in the higher registers above it. Chabon crafts his characters and story with humor, reality, and a sense that I know these people, felt invested in them, and was delighted and horrified and heartbroken for them. Only a brilliant writer can accomplish that. Chabon's sense of humor was often so cleve that it's sneak up on me in a serious moment and I'd laugh out loud while reading - a rare treat. But the book is not funny, nor simplistic. For all it's complexity, for the way that Chabon weaves his "real" characters together with lives that share so many similarities with those of their comic book superheroes, this is a brilliant book. Furthermore, it was a read that I could not put down. Do yourself a favor and buy a copy now! I would say so much more, but it seems there is a spoiler lurking in every page of the story, so I'll just leave it at - READ THIS.
