the first half of the book moved like a snail. it took me two attempts and 4 months to get through it. i didn't care about the characters nearly enough and the premise of high school kids solving a murder just doesn't impress me at all.

that being said, the second half was way better and only took me a day to get through. the characters didn't become any more likeable but their theories being wrong (with them, you know, being merely teenagers trying to solve an actual crime) was quite refreshing (while it lasted, at least) and i did like that ellery didn't turn out to be just a know-it-all mary sue. the answer to the mystery was good and fairly unexpected, and i'm glad i was smart enough to cover the last line, because my eyes tend to dart around a lot and i wouldn't have wanted to spoil that for myself. i did guess this was the scene that would close the book but i didn't expect the actual quote. also, as someone who's not a big fan of romance (at all) i liked that this specific plotline was just vaguely there, but never became too important.

overall, good book, would've definitely enjoyed it better if i'd read it when it was gifted to me a good 3 years ago, while i was still in high school. not very memorable either, but i still had a good time reading it, and with it being quite short, i think it was worth it.

with their mom in rehab, the twins ellery and ezra have no choice but to move in with her grandmother which leads them from california to a small town near the canadian border.
but said town, echo ridge, has a troubled past of losing its homecoming queens with one disappearing in 1996 and another one being murdered just five years ago, both unsolved.
ellery soon will be closer to the true crime she loves than she'd like to be when the killer suddenly claims to be back.

it's official, i'm a karen mcmanus fan. in my opinion, 'two can keep a secret' is even better than her highly popular book 'one of us is lying'. fast paced, intense characters with great dynamics, mysterious, full of secrets waiting to get out, really(!) unexpected plottwists. short: insanely good.
i was so invested from the first page to the last, speculating about victims, suspects, motives, everything. yet the plot twists and ending did not fail to surprise me (especially that last sentence still haunts me 5 hours after i finished the book).

If you want a fast read Karen Mc Manus is always my first go to. I believe this was her first book but it was the last of hers that I read and the one that I loved the very most.

I really enjoyed this up until the plot twist, I honestly can't say I liked that one very much. It wasn't the worst I've ever seen, but it could've been developed better.
