I read this because of the one quote they mention in the movie ‘Stuck In Love’ and that 30 second scene stirred more emotion in me than any story in this book. The end.

This book traveled in boxes and been sitting on my shelf since either my husband or I bought it for a college class. It legit has the yellow "used" sticker on the spine. Thank coronavirus and shelter in place for exploring my shelves. I grabbed this off the shelf and opened it, reading the first storiy, and I couldn't stop. I was floored by what Carver could accomplish in a few pages and with such straightforward language. He paints such a picture of life with his words and through these stories. He makes it seem like magic is real and he accomplishes it through stringing words together. Grab yourself a creamy cup of coffee, follow it up with a stiff scotch on the rocks, shut the door, and dive in to this one.

DNF around halfway

Nyt oli väkevää kamaa. Carverin vuonna 1981 novellikokoelma suomennettuna Sammakko kustantamosta. Lakonista ja tarkkaa, karua ja vinkeää. Amerikkalaista työväenluokkaa noin pääosin. Pariskuntia, perheitä, teinejä. Kertoja (usein) mies. Muistoja. Tapahtumia. Ohikulkuja suhteessa toisiin ihmisiin ja itseensä. Kärkinovelli (Mistä puhumme kun puhumme rakkaudesta) ihan huippu. Niin. Puhumme humaltuessa omistamisenhalusta, pakkomielteestä ja rakkauden kuolemasta nyt ainakin. Ja rakkaus voi olla sitä, että näkee rakkaansa. Siis näkee konkreettisesti sen ihmisen, jonka kanssa elää. Onko rakkaus riippuvuutta toisesta, joka voi kehittyä pakkomielteeksi, mutta ei välttämättä. Kaikki kokoelman novellit eivät käsitelleet rakkautta vaan eri tavoin nyrjähtäneitä ohikulkuja. Seksiä, alkoholia, väkivaltaa. Uhan ilmapiiri, väkivallan uhan ilmapiiri, joka purkautuu absurdisti. Koomista vinksahtelua joukossa. Kohtaamattomia ihmisiä totunnaisuuksista heränneinä. Erilaisia lähtöjä ja tajuamisia lähdön tarpeesta. Lähtö elämästä, parisuhteesta ja ihmissuhteesta noin yleensä. Kumma kirja, jonka tyyli ihaltavan karu. Tekisi mieli antaa tälle viisi tähteä, mutta jokin estää. Mikä? Ehkä tyyli ja sisällöt sittenkin liian toisteisia? Silti todella hyvä kokonaisuus.

What we talk about when we talk about love is loneliness, violence, lust, brutality, fragility. It's a full array of emotions and feelings, really. Of everything that we're capable of doing to and for someone else - from dying to killing.
