The way this book is written is stunning to say the least. I had a difficult time with some of the characters and their choices but I think that’s purposeful and real. This is a book I’ll be thinking about for a long time both for it’s artistry, character study, and it’s themes. Warning (not spoiler): this is a book that makes you self reflect a lot on your own relationships and choices.

The characters are devastatingly real and flawed. They’re not always likeable and that’s precisely why I kept reading. They felt real and I needed to see how these very real people handled trauma, love, work and friendship throughout their lives. It is extremely relatable.

Loved seeing the diverse representation- biracial, disable, asexual characters. It felt like real life.

There are some serious trigger warnings so just be aware!

Overall, I don’t think I can read this again for along time but it will definitely haunt me forever. Great book.

Loved the world of building video games- was very accessible for non-gamers.

I think this might be one of my least favorite books ever. I have loved so much of Zevin's work this one caught me so off guard. I don't understand the hype and how none gamers could slog through this. I am a gamer and I struggled. The book is pretentious. The characters are awful. There is no plot to speak of. No. No. No.

It really picks up around the midpoint and then I couldn’t put it down, vocabulary was a bit tough but you get used to it. High praise!
