I didn’t find Sadie and Sam particularly likable, but I completely understood their motivations and their choices were believable.
This was a really ambitious book, and I think Zevin executed it really well. You can tell she put in a lot of time researching to make it realistic. It’s clearly a love letter to gaming, and I really appreciated the style of the different sections. I think it added a lot to the narrative. This is definitely a book that I will enjoy even more on a future read, though having a physical copy would make it easier to flip back to remind myself of different sections.

Not a true adult/minor relationship, but the power dynamic was definitely like one. The ableism is more internalized.elinesee's review against another edition

Only adding the 'toxic friendship' tag because Sam and Sadie hurt each other a lot, mostly because of miscommunication and misconstruing the other's intentions, but they love each other a lot and are each other's most important person in the world so it's complicated, really.karen_lo's review against another edition

Those descriptions of everyday activities and hobbies made me feel right at home.
The characters were absolutely amazing, and the way they spilled their thoughts, emotions, histories, and fears made them feel like real human beings.
The different types of love explored in the book were simply beautiful. They all tangled together, evolving and surviving through the challenges of life.
I loved the inside jokes and the bursts of inspiration while they created video games. It even sparked my curiosity about video games as a new form of art.
I also absolutely loved how the story was told. It flowed so naturally, and I could easily kept up with the timeline shifts.
Amazing book, definitely never read a love story like this one before.
