I loved the idea of this book and loved that the story focused on a friendship as opposed to a romantic relationship. But something about the writing, especially the fact that the story was told non chronologically, made it difficult for me to empathize with the characters beyond a surface level.

I really don’t know what to do with this book. I cried for sure. I marked lines that made me cry. I also have a lot of questions. I have a lot of wishes, too? I think I can be okay without them coming true, though. I see the reasoning with how it is. One critique that comes to mind is that because this book covered so much, I felt like there were parts of the character’s story that were brushed over. I imagine the decisions for where this would have to happen would have been very difficult, but it is still that way as a reader. I wish many, many good years to Naomi (and the prospect of tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow).

Good book! Lot of show not tell w the characters. I was a bit frustrated by
SpoilerMarx’s death because it felt cliché and unnessecary…Sadie and Sam shouldn’t be together…but I thought the commentary on video game character death was really intriguing.
I hated Dov, he’s a disgusting character imo, but Sam and Sadie and Marx were all very interesting. The book just felt a teenie but flat so I can’t rate it any higher.

I’m the problem, it’s me.
This book came to me at the wrong time in my life. If i had read it 10 years ago or maybe 10 years from now, I think I would love it. I also think the hype over this book ruined it a bit for me, because I was not emotionally prepared for how heartbreaking much of this story is.
Zevin’s writing is beautiful, and her prose should absolutely be studied.
I wasn’t a fan of the shifting timelines, and the sad moments were just too sad for me. But the storytelling was immaculate, and the characters were more complex than nearly anything else I’ve ever read.
I do recommend, but don’t go in expecting the lighthearted book about friendship and video games that I was.
