I enjoyed many elements of this book. I am not familiar with many aspects of American culture. I have been to Tennessee Nashville & Memphis respectively and feel like I understand the culture historically of Memphis. This is not a happy book. But it is an important one.

Y’all know I love a multigenerational story! This story’s atmosphere really stuck with me as a Texas transplant in Illinois. The juxtaposition of Chicago & Memphis felt resonant & apt. This book felt to me like a quilt made up of beautiful images so intensely described you could basically smell the lemon meringue pie, brilliantly woven relationships among characters who jumped off the page, and an atmosphere that felt as thick as the humid southern air in the summer and brittle as the cold during a Midwest winter. Can’t wait to see what else Tara M. Stringfellow creates next!
