If you have ever read and loved Freckles by Gene Stratton Porter you will love Sir Gibbie by MacDonald. A wonderful coming of age story about a boy who begins life in abject poverty and abuse and grows through suffering and simple understanding of the Gospel and discipleship to obedience in following the life and words of Christ to a life of love and generosity. Where as in some sense GSP makes nature God George MacDonald will have no God but Christ himself. But the similarities are still there an orphan boy abused because of his perceived disabilities finds healing in nature and simplicity. I don’t want to spoil the story for anyone who will still read both but the simulators don’t end with this. A somewhat idyllic story but one that soothes the soul.
