Almost twelve-year-old Annabelle may have moved to a new house and neighborhood, but she’s still the same person she’s always been. At least she thinks she is, though her best friend Rachel seems to think otherwise. Rachel is constantly making digs and hurtful comments about Annabelle’s new house, her bedroom, her clothes, anything that looks like it cost a lot of money. Worst of all, Rachel’s attitude threatens to break apart their circle of friends, making it difficult for them to find a way to earn money to attend the music concert of the summer. The latest title in Margolis’ “Annabelle Unleashed” series, is chock full of popular culture references from iPhones to Taylor Swift. Annabelle is an enthusiastic, slightly self-centered tween who is ready to leap head first into teenage culture. Though Annabelle does not grow much as a character here, what she does learn is how to build communication and understanding within her social network, a valuable skill for anyone, but especially the community of preteen girls that Margolis so adeptly captures. Fans of the series will be eager to get their hands on this latest installment.
