This was a DNF for me. I made it nearly 50% of the way. I can only describe this book as “torture porn.” The torture and abuse and SA also felt very fetishized in my opinion rather than condemning.

I may be a lone prude here, but seriously. My safe word is gonna be “did not finish” because…enough. This felt so over the top and incongruent that I tapped out just shy of halfway.

This book…. Is complex. You feel like you hate the mc but also sympathize with her. Winstead is able to draw these unique emotions of tug and war. This book is best going in blind, but wow… I sat in my room for a solid 10 minutes thinking about it. I can’t wait to read her other novels.

4.5 ⭐️ I went into this book not knowing what it was really about. It was very dark and I am still processing it. Another reviewer said it best that it’s a cross between Eyes Wide Shut and the cult NXIVM. Every single trigger you could think of is in this book. I did like the story overall. I think the ending was a bit rushed. The book as a whole is heartbreaking to me. I actually didn’t see the twist coming and I thought I had it figured out.

Felt like an uninformed take on kink. Predictable and, worse than that, boring. A thinly veiled critique of 24/4 dynamics; I only finished it so that I could write an informed review. Yeesh.

I don’t have TW. The booked started off good. The more I read…I just felt it was goofy. I was bored and just wanted it to end.
