Here's the thing, if you sell the book as 'Main character [Bree] doesn't evacuate for a cat 5 hurricane but instead saves all the abandoned pets. No questions, no judgement', we really shouldn't have to read HALF of the book before getting to that premise.

HALF OF THE BOOK and she doesn't rescue one pet. Unless, you count separating Socks/Bob from his alcoholic owner.  Which we don't (count it).

But, I kept reading.
Also, on the back of the book it says "[...] when Bree's ex shoes up just she is falling hard for Drew, she has to ask herself if their steamy connection is just a passing storm-", which to me, sounded like she was really going to be caught in an emotional tone of uncertainty between the two men.  But, there was no uncertainty, she wanted nothing to do with Caleb (small relief we didn't have to go into a love triangle scenario).  In fact, she's pretty cool and level with him.  Now, with Kyle she's a bit unhinged, which is a bizarre turn only for the fact that the way she talks to him isn't a way I expected from our MC.

Also, Caleb & Kyle don't show up until the end of the book.  So we have this weird confrontation scene, only to then meet Judge Justine AND THEN ALSO meet Bree's bio mom.  It was just a lot right after the other and I'm not sure it was all that necessary.

And yet, I finished reading it.
Better than the last book I read, (thought it's getting the same rating).
Definitely going to forget about this book quickly though.

I thought this book was pretty good. There are actually a couple of things I didn’t like though. I didn’t like the main character’s (Bree Beckham) idea that bad things don’t really happen in this world. Bad things do happen. You always have to be cautious. Anything can happen in any given moment. So that was a little naive. Also, I didn’t like that Bree’s mother was begging her to go back to New York. No one should ever beg someone to do something they clearly don’t want to do, especially if the person being told what to do is a grown adult. Now what I did like about the story was what Bree did for the people who evacuated the island. She helped take care of their animals after the storm passed. And she did that for no pay. That’s awesome. I think that people should be like that in real life. That was very nice of her. She didn’t have do that. I noticed that Bree was a bit forward. She kissed the guy she liked, Drew Hartwell, a couple of times. But that’s okay. There’s nothing wrong with being forward with the person you like. So long as the feelings are reciprocated, there’s no problem with that. And some men are forward too and that’s okay. Bree being forward didn’t annoy me. Anyway, I really enjoyed this book. I recommend it to anyone who likes Women’s Fiction novels and likes reading about people who fall in love and does good things for people. This was a good read.

I thought that this book was pretty fun but not as romance heavy as I was hoping for. There were some minor problems that I had with the overall book itself such as the author typing "..." on almost every single page which got really old. Another aspect that annoyed me throughout this book was at the beginning of each chapter, there was information on how to survive during a hurricane and what to get from the store and all of that. I found it very distracting from the story and honestly, it didn't add anything special to the story for me. Also, the love interest in the story is quite possessive of the main character which is a trait that I don't really like to see. Lastly, I would say there is trigger warnings for animal abuse and mentions of sexual assault in the book so please be aware of that before going into the book. Overall, I would say that there are better books out there that handle these topics compared to this one.

A cute story, but if you've ever been familiar with any of Meg Cabot's work (including Princess Diaries), it seems like an AU fanfic. Characters recycled into an alternate universe. I did enjoy the setting of an island preparing for and then dealing with the aftermath of the hurricane, but I would have preferred a little more depth. Everything, including the romance, seemed to be completely lacking nuance, and one dimensional. Which is odd, considering the things Bree was dealing with on a personal level.

Also some things with wording that I didn't care for, like calling a side character who displayed what could have been a social awkwardness or cognitive delay "slow".

Overall not a story I feel really strongly about.
