(3.5 stars) I’m a fan of fairy tale retellings, although there were several in this book I was unfamiliar with (e.g., Bluebeard). I enjoyed how Carter showed how magic isn’t the only power to ensnare women but also patriarchal expectations, fathers’ sovereignty over their daughters’ lives and bodies, and women’s own overpowering sexual desires (for good or for evil). The negative: prose that was lovely but too erudite. I’ve never bragged about my vocabulary, but I consider myself well read. Carter’s prose was too highbrow for easy reading.

Holy fuck this woman can write. This is probably going to be one of my most precious books ever.

A collection of short stories based on folklore, one that Angela Carter distinguishes as her own with her enchanting concoction of exquisite prose, dark tone, and feminist stance woven into her tales.

My love for these stories started subtly, then grew with each one read. Angela Carter was truly a master of the craft. ♥️

Lush, exquisite tension. I should have read these more slowly than I did. And I want to take a closer look at her language.
