this was a really great book! the writing was so colourful and full of life, and i liked all the characters- even if they were short lived.

the storyline was quite hard to follow, and the flashes between past and present tense were confusing to read, without anything properly distinguishing between the tenses. i also found the sex switch hard to understand, and didn’t quite get if it was psychological or…just straight fiction.

otherwise, a good read for a slow day.

Charming and different. This book has no chapters and at first that bothered me, then I came to like it. This book walks to the beat of its own drum. A must read from the author

coming off of life of pi, i had high expectations. i saw potential in the opening pages, in the play with gender identity, but it wasn't long before it fell flat. and i mean FLAT. remember in life of pi, when you're lost at sea convinced you'll never be found and drenched in boredom, excruciating boredom? well, that happens here too only without all the confidence that a couple hundred pages of compelling fiction can give you.

i say skip it. or read it and prove me wrong.

Probably the saddest ending of a book I have ever read. Sort of felt like the entire book was a set up to shove you off the cliff that was the end. Nevertheless, still a pretty captivating read. I probably marked down the most quotes from this book than any other I've read recently, but to me the story didn't necessarily match the beauty of the prose. Probably my least favorite Martel book, but that's not really saying much, considering they are all wonderful.

the adventure, mystery and magic in this story of "self-discovery" takes the reader places you don't think you'd ever go.

there are lines that are so delightfully written i read and re-read them as i made my way through the story. i even underlined some of them.

Absolutely bizarre with streaks of magical realism. I was quite let down by the ending (which felt more like a lack of ending, which I suppose is Yann Martel's trademark, really).

A big deception. After reading Life of Pi, I was expecting something on that line but Self is just terrible: incomprehensible, boring and obnoxious
