This book WRECKED ME. I was bawling by page 10. I said to my friends, "I didn't cry that much, only at the beginning, middle, and end." Incredible. I was in the worst reading slump after finishing. This was my 9th book in January... I finished only one book in February! Devastation of the highest degree AND I'D DO IT AGAIN.

I really appreciate how this author writes humans and human responses.
i absolutely flew through this book.
and i really liked the bluntness of it.

my main critizism is the limitations and faults in the worldbuilding.

I feel like the author decided to try and explore many different real social issues in a fantasy setting, but since it's a standalone and so many issues were involved, none were really explored well.
Cool magic system? Yes. Entertaining? Sure.
a good commentary on the patriarchy/colonialism/industrialism/etc? Hell no

A fantasy taking a hard look at sexism, classism, and racism and holding back none of its punches. I enjoyed the world building and the characters persisting despite all that they’re up against.

There is a bit of buildup before the magic system is established to the reader and characters are deep into the plot, but once everything starts unraveling it doesn’t stop.

I look forward to reading more books by M L Wang. I listened to the audiobook and will be seeking out other books read by narrator Moira Quirk.

This was excellent, such an intriguing and horrifying magic system, but you can also see parallels with our world reflected in it. I liked the ending
having sciona die but be ambiguous for carra and thomil was excellent

Wanted to absolutely hit someone with their sexism and racism, and I loved her rants to
the doctor for example

Kind of sad
that her aunt and cousin abandoned her but also realistic...

Would recommend to people

I loved getting pulled in immediately with this book, Wang sets the scene very well. The dark academia vibes are strong and extremely well done. The magic system was quite complex and was a bit hard to follow for me at first as I wanted to understand the mechanics from the beginning but it’s continually explained and an integral part of the book which I really appreciated. Lots of heavy themes with all the sexism, racism, classism, turning a blind eye to where all of our resources come from, etc.- but works as a great mirror to very prominent real-world problems. While not exactly tidy, I did actually enjoy the ending and felt that it was appropriate given Sciona’s character and everything that had happened. I’m looking forward to reading more from Wang and seeing how it compares!
